Young Dancers

Now Next Dance/Moving Mentoring combines dance training, choreography, and leadership skills in a fun, energizing, empowering workshop. Young Dancers are taught by a professional arts faculty and are mentored by 1:1 by college-age Dance Mentors enrolled in our teacher training program. We are organized around the themes of Action, Support, Curiosity, Challenge, and Resilience with a dance and leadership component to each and a performance at the end of the week. Dancers of all experience levels are welcome, as we explore contemporary dance movement vocabulary and collaborative choreography. Dancers will increase their strength, flexibility, and rhythm while working on self-confidence and interpersonal skills. Our exceptional program design creates a special experience for each dancer.

"Now Next Dance is an empowering mix of wonderful, positive experiences. The dancers are given a healthy foundation for accepting themselves and each other. I believe a program like NND helps mitigate the damaging and overwhelming pressure to be perfect that our society and culture places on our kids. I wish every child could experience NND." -Parent

Summer 2017 Schedule

Monday August 7 to Friday August 11, 1pm-4pm,

performance Friday 4-5pm

1pm-2:15pm Modern Dance Technique Class

Facilitated by a master teaching artist and co-taught by Dance Mentors

This class moves through our 5 elements of a community dance class, including warm ups, self awareness, traveling, and skill building. Each day is themed to one of our psychoeducational guideposts: Action, Support, Curiosity, Challenge, and Resilience and we embody those as physical skills, cognitive concepts, and affective experiences. Because there are as many Dance Mentors taking the class as there are Young Dancers, we are able to individualize the class for each student, making it both accessible and challenging to students with no dance experience, or those with years of dance training.

2:15pm-3pm Collaborative Choreography

Alongside their college dance mentors, the Young Dancers create and learn a piece under the direction of the master teaching artist.

3pm-4pm Leadership Self-Portraits

After a quick snack break, the Young Dancers and Dance Mentors pair up to work on a Leadership Self-Portrait, a collage, movement, and text project. Young Dancers work with a different Dance Mentor each day and the mentors guide the art-making and conversation with themes from our guideposts. This is also a great time for Young Dancers to ask questions about college and practice their social skills.

At present, our program is only open to Young Dancers who attended in 2015 or 2016. We will open enrollment if space is available on May 15. To join our mailing list, please contact us using the form below.
